What is non-peroxide LED teeth whitening?
Non-peroxide LED teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that uses a whitening gel paired with a blue LED light to lift the appearance of surface stains on the teeth. The gel formulation does not contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which are the active ingredients used in traditional dental whitening.
The treatment is designed to address the everyday discolouration that builds up on tooth enamel over time from coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, smoking, vaping, and other staining foods and drinks. It is a cosmetic service, not a dental procedure, and is performed in a beauty studio setting rather than a dental office.
This kind of whitening has grown in popularity over the last few years as a gentler alternative for clients who want a brighter smile without the sensitivity that peroxide treatments can sometimes cause.
The Process
How the treatment works
At your appointment, a thin layer of whitening gel is applied to the front surface of your teeth. The gel is activated by a blue LED light positioned in front of your mouth, which accelerates the lifting of surface stains. The light is non-thermal and you remain awake and comfortable throughout.
A typical session involves three short cycles under the LED light, with the gel reapplied between cycles. The full appointment takes approximately 60 minutes from start to finish, including consultation, treatment, and aftercare guidance.
Because the formulation is non-peroxide, most clients experience little to no sensitivity during or after the treatment. Some clients notice mild temporary sensitivity in the hours following their session, which typically resolves on its own within 24 hours.
The Comparison
Peroxide versus non-peroxide whitening
If you have looked into teeth whitening before, you have probably come across both peroxide and non-peroxide options. They sound similar on the surface, but they are quite different in how they work, where you can get them, and who they suit. Here is a clear breakdown.
Peroxide whitening
- Active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide
- Penetrates into the tooth to bleach internal discolouration
- Performed by dental professionals in clinical settings
- Can produce more dramatic results in fewer sessions
- Often produces a tingling sensation during and after treatment, which is normal for this type of whitening
- Generally a higher price point per session
Non-peroxide whitening
- Uses a peroxide-free whitening gel paired with LED light
- Lifts surface stains on tooth enamel without bleaching
- Performed as a cosmetic treatment in a beauty studio
- Gradual, subtle results suited to maintenance and refresh
- Significantly lower likelihood of sensitivity
- More accessible price point, easier to maintain over time
Neither option is objectively better. Peroxide whitening can give faster, more dramatic results for clients with deeper discolouration, but at the trade-off of higher cost and the tingling sensation that usually comes with it. Non-peroxide whitening is well suited to clients looking for a comfortable, regular maintenance approach to keeping their smile bright, especially those who have had reactions to peroxide treatments in the past.
Sensitive Teeth
A gentler option for sensitive smiles
If you have ever tried a peroxide whitening treatment, you may know the tingling sensation that can come with it. That feeling is a normal reaction to the peroxide gel, and most clients tolerate it without issue, but for people with naturally sensitive teeth or thinner enamel it can be uncomfortable enough to put them off whitening altogether.
This is one of the main reasons we chose to offer non-peroxide LED whitening at The Smile Garden. The peroxide-free formula is significantly gentler on the teeth and gums, which makes it well suited to clients who want a brighter smile without the sensitivity. Most clients report no tingling at all during or after the appointment.
If you have a history of dental sensitivity, this is worth knowing before you book. You can also leave a note in your Fresha booking and we will walk through any concerns at the start of your appointment.
Your Visit
First visit and maintenance
How often you visit depends on your starting tooth shade, your daily habits, and how bright you want to maintain your results. Most clients begin with a single session, then return for periodic touch-ups every 4 to 8 weeks to maintain their preferred shade.
First Visit
Your initial whitening session
$119$69
Your first appointment includes a short consultation about your goals, your current routine, and any sensitivity history. We then complete a full whitening session with three LED cycles. You will leave with personalised aftercare guidance for the first 48 hours.
Maintenance
Refresh and maintain
$79
Returning clients can book a maintenance session to refresh their results. The session is the same length as a first visit and is a popular choice every 4 to 8 weeks for clients maintaining a particular shade ahead of an event or as part of their regular self-care.
"If it can stain a white shirt, it can stain your teeth." Aftercare in the first 48 hours is the most important factor in how long your results last.
Aftercare
The first 48 hours after your appointment
Your teeth are slightly more porous in the hours immediately after a whitening session, which means anything that would normally stain your teeth will stain them more easily during this window. Sticking to a light, neutral diet for the first 24 to 48 hours protects your results.
Foods and drinks to avoid
- Coffee, tea, and matcha
- Red wine
- Dark sodas and energy drinks
- Tomato sauce, curry, soy sauce
- Berries and dark fruits
- Chocolate
- Smoking and vaping
Foods and drinks to choose
- Water
- Milk and plain yogurt
- White rice and pasta with white sauce
- Fish, chicken, turkey
- Cauliflower, potatoes, white onions
- Bananas, pears, apples (peeled)
- Plain bread and crackers
Sensitivity. If you experience any mild temporary sensitivity, a sensitive-formula toothpaste and avoiding very hot or very cold foods for the first day will usually resolve it.
Long-term maintenance. The best long-term results come from a combination of brushing twice daily, flossing, regular dental cleanings with your dentist, and booking maintenance sessions every 4 to 8 weeks. Brushing immediately after consuming staining foods and drinks also significantly extends the life of your results.
The Smile Garden offers cosmetic teeth whitening treatments only. We are not a dental clinic and do not diagnose or treat dental conditions. Results vary from client to client based on natural tooth shade, enamel, lifestyle, and the nature of staining. We recommend consulting your dentist about any underlying dental health concerns before booking a cosmetic whitening appointment.
Frequently Asked
Teeth whitening questions, answered
Is non-peroxide teeth whitening safe?
Yes. Non-peroxide whitening uses a peroxide-free gel that lifts surface stains on the enamel rather than bleaching the inside of the tooth. As a cosmetic treatment performed in a beauty studio, it does not penetrate the tooth structure or alter your natural dental health. We always recommend consulting your dentist if you have any underlying dental concerns before booking.
Is this treatment suitable for sensitive teeth?
This is one of the main reasons clients choose non-peroxide whitening over a traditional peroxide treatment. The peroxide-free formula is significantly gentler, and most clients with sensitive teeth tolerate it without any discomfort during or after the appointment. If you have a history of strong reactions to dental whitening, leave a note when you book and we will adjust your session accordingly.
How long do the results last?
Results vary based on your starting tooth shade, your daily habits, and how diligent you are with aftercare. On average, clients maintain their results for 4 to 8 weeks before booking a maintenance session. Heavy coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking will shorten the timeline. Brushing immediately after consuming staining foods or drinks will extend it.
How many sessions will I need to see results?
Most clients see a visible difference after a single session. Clients with deeper or more set-in staining may benefit from a second session within a few weeks of the first to build on the initial result. After that, periodic maintenance sessions every 4 to 8 weeks are usually enough to keep your results consistent.
Will whitening work on veneers, crowns, or fillings?
No. Whitening treatments only affect the appearance of natural tooth enamel. Dental work like veneers, crowns, bonding, and composite fillings will not change colour during the treatment. If you have visible dental work on your front teeth, your natural teeth may end up a different shade after whitening, which can sometimes be noticeable. We are happy to talk through this with you before you book.
How is this different from teeth whitening at the dentist?
Dental whitening is a clinical procedure performed by a licensed dental professional, typically using a stronger peroxide-based gel. It works by penetrating the tooth to bleach internal discolouration and tends to produce more dramatic results. Non-peroxide cosmetic whitening, by contrast, lifts surface staining only and is performed in a beauty studio setting. The two services are complementary rather than competitive. Clients who want maximum results often combine occasional dental whitening with regular cosmetic maintenance sessions.
Can I have whitening if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
We do not recommend any cosmetic whitening treatment during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. While there is no specific evidence that non-peroxide whitening is harmful in these situations, the conservative approach is to wait until after this period before booking. Please reach out to reschedule if you have already booked an appointment.
Is there a minimum age for the treatment?
Clients must be 18 years of age or older to book a teeth whitening appointment with us. This is consistent with industry standards for cosmetic whitening services.
