Soft Gel, Hard Gel, Acrylic — What's Actually the Difference?

If you've tried to research nail services online and ended up more confused than when you started, you're not alone. The terminology in the nail industry is genuinely inconsistent, and different salons use the same words to mean different things.

Here's a straightforward breakdown of the main options — what each one is, what it does, and who it suits.

Regular Gel Polish

Regular gel polish (sometimes called shellac, gel colour, or hybrid) is essentially a polish that is cured under a UV or LED lamp instead of air-drying. It gives a glossy, chip-resistant finish that lasts up to two weeks on most people.

It adds no structure to the nail and provides no additional strength. If your natural nails are weak or short, gel polish won't change that. It's a good option if your nails are already healthy and you primarily want colour that lasts longer than regular polish.

Soft Gel — Builder Gel in a Bottle (BIAB)

BIAB is a thicker, self-levelling gel that is applied directly over the natural nail as an overlay. Unlike gel polish, it adds a thin layer of flexible structure that reinforces the nail and allows it to grow without breaking.

The key word is flexible. BIAB moves with the natural nail rather than against it, which is why it tends to be kinder to the nail plate over repeated applications than harder enhancement products. It's particularly well-suited to clients who have struggled to grow their nails because they keep snapping at a certain length.

BIAB is maintained with a rebalance appointment every three to four weeks rather than a full removal, which means the natural nail is not repeatedly stripped back to zero. Over time, most clients notice their own nails becoming visibly stronger and longer underneath.

At The Glossy Garden, we use soft gel products from Après Gel, formulated for professional use with natural nail health as a priority.

Best for: clients with weak, brittle, or short nails who want to build length and strength over time. Also popular for clients who have had damage from previous acrylic or gel enhancements.

Hard Gel

Hard gel is a rigid, fully cured gel product that creates a harder, more durable surface than BIAB. It cannot be soaked off and must be filed down for removal, which requires more care to avoid over-filing the natural nail.

The benefit of hard gel is its strength. For clients who are hard on their hands, work in environments that put pressure on their nails, or simply find that softer products lift or chip prematurely, hard gel holds up significantly better.

At The Glossy Garden, hard gel services are performed using the Après Nova nail lamp — a professional LED lamp that also delivers red light therapy during the curing process. Red light at a clinical wavelength supports circulation in the nail bed and surrounding skin, which most standard nail lamps do not provide.

Best for: clients who want maximum durability and a smooth, high-gloss finish. Also suitable for extensions where a rigid structure is preferred.

Acrylic

Acrylic is a powder and liquid monomer system that creates a hard, durable enhancement. It has been a standard in the nail industry for decades and is widely available at most nail salons.

The primary trade-off with acrylic is that application involves filing down the natural nail surface before the product is applied, and removal requires soaking in acetone for an extended period. Used correctly by a skilled technician, the damage is manageable. The concern tends to arise with repeated applications over time or improper removal.

The Glossy Garden does not offer acrylic services. Our focus is on soft and hard gel treatments using hypoallergenic products that are gentler on the natural nail.

Which Service Is Right for You?

If you're not sure which direction to go, the best starting point is a soft gel overlay. It works for most nail types, has the most forgiving removal process, and gives you a clear picture of how your nails respond to a gel product before committing to something more permanent.

Book a consultation note in your Fresha appointment and we'll talk through your nail history and goals before we start.
